SAMA News – Socotra – Reports In presence of Salem Hawash, general director of ecological protection in Socotra, Omar Soliman, head of Culture department, Dr. Abd El-Kareem Nasher, director of UNEP in Socotra, eng. Mazen Al-Durhy, coordinator of GIZ Socotra, Mr. Foad Naseeb, Mrs. Ashwak, principle of Al-Zahra Secondary School, Nasser Abd El-Rahman, president of Socotra Wildlife Society, Mr. Abd Al-Aziz, general secretary of the society and Samir Said, director of public relation, Socotra Wildlife Society launched a new campaign from Al-Zahra Secondary School to all schools of Socotra under the slogan of ” Together for Preserving Bio-Diversity in Socotra Archipelago”.
During the launch ceremony, Nasser Abd El-Rahman, president of Socotra Wildlife Society (SWS) welcomed the attendants and talked about the awareness raising activities of the society all over Socotra. He also referred to the significance of Socotra as an international heritage spot in addition to the significance of awareness rising programs for improving wildlife ecological protection in Socotra.
Eng. Mazen Al-Durhy, coordinator of GIZ Socotra, talked about the role of foreign associations and societies working on improving Socotra Archipelago and preserving its bio-diversity. He also praised the role of Socotra Wildlife Society in raising ecological awareness among citizens.
Omar Soliman, head of Culture department, indicated the importance of Socotra as an international heritage post and asserted that local authorities supports and encourages the SWS activities.
Dr. Abd El-Kareem Nasher, director of UNEP in Socotra, asserted the importance of increasing Socotra’s citizens’ ecological awareness to preserve their island.
At the end of the ceremony, attendants listened to lecture about “Dracaena Cinnabari” tree, the national symbol of Socotra. The lecture asserted the importance of preserving rare tree species as it represents a touristic destination for tourists from all over the world.
