France has reported 60,486 new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, the first time a European nation has surpassed 60,000 cases in single day.
The unenviable record comes hours after an announcement that the country would be rolling out rapid testing in all of its care homes. 800,000 antigen tests have already been deployed and 800,000 more will be sent next week.
French Health Minister Olivier Veran said the approach would avert the “very strict confinement measures” the country took during the first wave.”
Its surge in cases is contributing to wider alarm in Europe Surge in cases across over the availability of hospital beds as many battle to overcome the second wave of coronavirus.
The total number of cases since the outbreak began was 139,891, with 510 deaths and 136,936.
Total global cases stand at 48.1 million with 1.22m deaths and almost 32m recoveries
