Egypt Resumes Diplomatic Relations with Qatar

SMA NEWS – CAIRO

Egypt and Qatar have agreed to resume diplomatic relations in line with the commitments made at AlUla summit in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

“Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Qatar exchanged, today, January 20, 2021, two official memoranda, in virtue of which the two countries agreed to resume diplomatic relations,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Egypt reopened its airspace to Qatari flights on January 12 and flights between the two countries were resumed.

Gulf Arab leaders signed a declaration at AlUla on January 5 to ease a rift with Qatar.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri also attended the meeting of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, which comprises Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.
