An Israeli military court issued a two-year prison sentence against Palestinian Legislative Council member Khalida Jarrar, a Palestinian rights group said Monday.
Jarrar has been detained since October 2019 following an Israeli crackdown against Palestinian political activists and university students.
“The ruling included a 24-month prison sentence and a 12-month suspension for five years from the day of her release, as well as a fine of $1,200,” the Addameer association confirmed.
Jarrar was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006. She is also a senior member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
Jarrar was arrested in 2019 along with dozens of other PFLP members after a terror attack by the organization took the life of Rina Shnerb, a 17-year-old Israeli girl, close to the West Bank settlement of Dolev.
Because she was first detained over a year ago, Jarrar will only serve about eight months of her sentence.
Israel, the United States, and the European Union consider the PFLP to be a terrorist organization.
Addameer said the Israeli court’s ruling is evidence that Palestinian political leaders are routinely arrested and detained as part of an ongoing Israeli effort to suppress their right to political sovereignty and self-determination.
It urged the international community to abide by its responsibilities under international law and uphold its legal and moral commitment to end the Israeli occupation and urge the immediate release of all Palestinian political prisoners.
