Settlement in the guise of displacement.. Northern migrations hijack Abyan from its identity

SMA NEWS – ZINJIBAR

Abyan governorate is groaning, due to an unprecedented wave of displacement, that has affected all its villages and cities, amid concern about the change in the demographic structure and the deterioration of the economic conditions of citizens, due to the increase in employment and limited job opportunities.

Abyan is witnessing a decline in its agricultural area, with the growth of the construction movement in response to the demand of the displaced and the emergence of new population centers consisting of the displaced, in a scene that indicates an attempt to kidnap the southern governorate from its identity.

Brotherhood organizations – of an international nature – are leading the northern settlement movement in Abyan, by facilitating residence for the displaced and providing housing and a source of fixed income to support the family.

Khanfar and Zinjibar districts topped the areas where the concentration of displaced people is spreading, as they are witnessing a crowding of job opportunities, and a clear impact of the high prices and the collapse of services.

Observers point to the political calculations behind the displacement and settlement process in Abyan governorate, supported by foreign hands, to wrest Abyan from its southern identity.

They see that the settlement plot is backed by fake humanitarian organizations led by Turkish and Qatari leaders that support the displaced with hard currency to buy land and housing.

Local sources explained that the settlement outposts start with a nest of straw and then turn into a wooden house, in a plan to encourage settlement in the villages and regions of the south.

Citizens refuse to use the term displaced people from the north, stressing that Yemeni families in Abyan leave for their original areas on occasions and holidays before returning back again to the south, pointing out that the displaced person is a person threatened with death in his areas of residence, not like those.
