Atletico Madrid move top and Real Sociedad held by Alaves

SMA NEWS – MADRID

Atletico Madrid moved to the top of La Liga after the 12th round of matches in Spain after Real Sociedad were held to a 0-0 draw by Alaves on Sunday night.

Real Sociedad were without David Silva with a muscle injury and he was missed as they failed to break down a rival that defended solidly despite losing Rodrigo Battaglia for a straight red card with half an hour left.

Willian Jose had the best chance of the game with 10 minutes left, but Alaves keeper Fernando Pacheco produced a good reflex save to leave his side unbeaten in six matches.

Kieran Trippier was decisive as Atletico Madrid beat Real Valladolid 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in a game Diego Simeone’s side controlled.

The full-back crossed for Thomas Lemar to open the scoring in the 55th minute and then put Marcos Llorente through to seal the win in the 71st minute. Llorente’s entry into the game at the start of the second half was also vital as he helped to give Atletico the drive they needed to take their seventh consecutive league win.
